KMC X9 Chain is used by many recumbent manufacturers. 1. How can you offer such a good price?
We buy giant 500ft spools of it, and we developed a dispensing machine that lets us measure out and break the chain quickly and easily. It even puts it in the bag for us. We sell a lot of chain, so that's a good thing.
2. How do I measure how long my chain is?
There are several ways. One is to count the links. You only have to count the outer links, as inners and outers are always paired. Each (inner, outer) pair is 1 inch. A typical recumbent chain will be 10-12 feet, so it will have 120 to 144 or so pairs of links. That's countable, but tedious. There are some tricks to counting to make it easier, explained below. You can also remove the chain and measure it, but that's often a rather greasy thing to do.
3. How do I count my links?
- If you have a master link on your existing chain, rotate the pedals until the master link is someplace easily viewed, like the front edge of the front derailleur, or just as the chain goes into the rear derailleur. Slowly crank the pedals and count the outer links that go by.
- If you don't have a master link, or if it's hard to tell it apart from the other links, poke a tuft of yarn through a link to mark your starting point. Choose an easily viewed spot on the chain, like the front edge of the front derailleur, or just as the chain goes into the rear derailleur. - Do the yarn trick, but look for the tooth count on your small chainring. Shift to the small ring, line the crankarm up with the front of the front derailleur, and put the tuft in there. Count the number of full revolutions until the tuft approaches the same spot. On the last revolution, you'll stop at the full revolution point. Count the number of links back to the tuft, and add that to the number that went by in full revolutions. With a typical small chainring, you won't have much to count.
- Shift into the big ring. Measure the distance in inches from the cassette up to the top of the big ring. Multiply that by two. Add half the number of teeth in the big ring, and you'll have a close approximation of the length in inches. Convert to feet and round up.

Ordering chain in bulk from Terracycle is the only way to go for bents. Hardest part is measuring yours. Comes with master link , so only order one if you what a carry spare. 🤙😎

I recently got around to changing the OG chain on my 17-year-old catrike expedition. I ordered what I believed to be the proper amount of links. I wrote a review several weeks ago after receiving my bulk chain, and chain idler regarding the shipping, packaging and component quality. Since then I have accumulated approximately 200 miles giving me sufficient time to determine if ride performance and efficiency were affected. My trike is 5 years old, and I am currently on my third set of drivetrain components, chain idler, chain, chain tensioner, Nuvinci drive cog, and Bafang crank sprocket. My system is powered by an HL WDDAB Li-ion battery (48V17AH816Wh). Prior to installing the latest set of drivetrain components (previous chain when checked was over 1% out), I could get 4 days of riding on a full battery charge. With the new components installed I am getting 5 1/2 days of riding on a full charge, a 27% increase in battery life per charge, a huge gain in efficiency. As far as performance, pedaling seems easier, and my Nuvinci N380 IGH, shifts smoother, and is much quieter. All in all these were great purchases and Kudos to T Cycle for offering exceptional components at very reasonable prices. THANK YOU!!
It's great having a one piece chain with one quick link, instead of multiple chain segments and multiple quick links. Chain was packed well, and arrived in good condition. Now a word to the wise, do yourself a favor and check your chain frequently, I did not, ignored some minor performance changes, and noises that should have alerted me, but being Mr. frugal cheapskate, ran the chain longer than I should have. By the time I actually checked the chain is was over 1 % out, not good, and my stupidity caused me to purchase and replace the crank sprocket, chain idler, and drive cog, not only more expensive but a lot more work. I did purchase the "Park Tool" chain checker (CC-2), and will be checking the chain frequently, and replacing the chain as soon as it reaches 0.75 % out, and buying more bulk chain from T-Cycle.
Only took a day to get 132 inches of chain instead of the 127 inches I picked up first.
I am no expert on bike chains. I like the ease of purchase, and the packaging. Inclusion of a connector link was appreciated. It works perfectly well on my recumbent bicycle.
Attached photos show my newly mounted 11 foot KMC chain running over a Teracycle idler. They also show my underseat Teracycle pannier rack which has been used for thousands of miles of loaded touring.

THe best Source for bulk chain from 9 speed to 12. I bought an extra foot to be sure I had enough for my Catrike Expedition. Easy install, KMC is the best chain to use.
I'm planning to swap the 36T chainring on my cargo E-Bike conversion to 52T. Nobody else sells chains long enough for cargo bikes, trikes and recumbent bikes.
