FAQ

1. Is this the right hydration pack for me?

If you want to carry 3 liters (about 100 ounces, or 5 water bottles worth), the answer is probably yes. The 4.0 is one of our most popular bags due to it's capacity and adaptability. It fits on a lot of different seats and it's 3 liter capacity is great for long rides.

2. Will it fit on my seat?

Quite probably. The harness system is very adaptable. Basically all you need is something up fairly high on the back of your seat that you can wrap a strap around. The large Fastex buckle strap goes there. At the bottom of the pack, another strap goes down around something at the bottom of the seat- the under seat brace, seat mount, etc. There is surely something there the strap can use. The pack is tensioned from top to bottom and pulled to the back of the seat. An optional third strap wraps around the front of the seat. The optional wraparound strap can be positioned several different places up and down on the pack to best match with your seat. If you have a mesh seat with a smooth back, like the newer Rans seats, we make a Gear Belt that attaches to the top of the seat and lets you attach all kinds of things, including this pack. If you have a hardshell seat, we generally recommend the 70LS/Double Century system, which is specifically designed for that type of seat.

3. How much does it hold?

The main area of the pack is 7.5 inches wide and 14 inches tall (19 by 36cm). This is generously sized for most 3 liter bladders.  If you're not carrying a bladder, or your bladder isn't full, there is room for other things like a jacket. The back of the pack has spare webbing loops and a big block of Velcro so you can attach other things, like our Tool Pouch, Pump Pack, or anything you'd like to strap on.

4. Is it easy to get on and off?

Once you've figured out the best way to mount it on your particular seat, it's very easy. All the straps have quick release buckles. The lower strap can usually be left on your bike/trike if you wish.

5. Can I carry other things in it?

Yes. The 4.0 has one big pocket, with a large, heavy duty zipper running all the way up and down one side. If you're not carrying a bladder in it, you can carry all sorts of things, up to about 17 inches (43cm) long. Tools, lunch, a jacket, pump, etc. all fit, there's quite a lot of capacity.

Owner's Manual

The harness system works by tensioning the pack top to bottom, with an optional strap (provided) that goes around the front of the seat for additional control.

You need something up fairly high on the back of your seat that to wrap the top strap around. A horizontal tube, a strap, lots of things will do. If it's an open horizontal tube, wrap the large top strap around a couple of times to get a better side to side grip. If it's something smaller/grippier, just wrap the strap around once. Loosen the buckle to let the pack hang down.

At the bottom of the pack, there are two grey strap loops. A grey nylon strap connects from one of the loops, down around something sturdy under your seat (another tube, the seat mount itself, a strap on your seat) and back up to the other grey strap loop. There is surely something there the strap can use. Again, if it's an open bit of tube, wrap the strap around twice to give it a better grip.

Once the top and bottom straps are in place, pull the end of the top strap to tension the pack from top to bottom. To insert your water bladder, loosen the top strap so the bag sags a bit. Open the zipper all the way and slide the bottom of the bladder in first. Route the tube through one of the two ports, and zip up the zipper. Retighten the top strap. If you'd like the bag more firmly held to the seat, wrap the optional third strap around the front of the seat. The optional wraparound strap can be positioned several different places up and down on the pack to best match with your seat. Pick the spot you'd like and install the strap there. After installing, the strap can be removed and installed simply by releasing the buckles.

Compatible Bike List

This pack is very versatile and made to go on nearly any recumbent seat. There needs to be some place near the top and the bottom of the seat for a strap to wrap around and that is about all. If you have a smooth topped mesh seat with nothing available for a strap to use, we make a Gear Belt that attaches around the top of the seat and lets you attach all sorts of things to the back of your seat.

This bag is generally not recommended for hardshell and narrow mesh seats, though it can be adapted to be used there. We make another system, the 70LS/Double Century, just for seats like these.
